How to refine your Twitter engagement

Jodi

How exhausting do you find Twitter? If you are following more than 50 ardent tweeters then you will probably find it quite tiring to keep up with everything that’s being said.

If you’re on Hootsuite or similar then you can set up a stream that includes tweets that have “mentioned” you. But then there are all the other tweets that may well interest you if only you had the time to read them all.

So it is vital that you follow only those tweeters that are truly right for you. Do these tweeters chat about your topic or interest? Do they spend time tweeting and engaging with others? Have they got something interesting to say? If the answer to all these questions is yes, then it’s worth holding on to these people. But if you answer no to any of the questions then it may be worth “unfollowing” them.

After all, for many people Twitter is a business tool and in business you would normally want to engage with people who could potentially be of benefit to you business.

Another thing to consider is whether the people you follow on twitter are also following interesting people or being followed by interesting people. Check out their followers and perhaps follow these tweeters yourself.

And every so often, go back and decide if it’s still worth following everyone. Are you following “worthwhile” tweeters? Doping all this will make your Twitter life a lot easier – and you potential for marketing/increasing business a whole lot more concentrated.

Study debunks the negatives of Information Technology

Jodi

For many years there was a great deal of negative press about many things related to IT. Experts claimed it might not be good for our mental and physical health to be so attached to a box in the corner of a room. But now a study claims that there are positive links between access to technology and feelings of well-being.

BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, surveyed 35,000 people worldwide and found that access to communication devices was the most valued.

The study found that people of both sexes with low incomes or poor education, as well as women in developing countries, were most influenced emotionally by their access to technology.

The theory is that ownership of technology is seen as a status symbol by many people and by many cultures.
It’s still not that physically beneficial to sit at a computer all day long, though. But maybe a study will find that thanks to laptops and mobile phones we’re all on the move just a little but more, while still attached to our chosen technology.

But now a £1billion boost will see the service rolled out to a further 20% of the population by 2015. It’s claimed the first four million people will be connected by the end of the year.

New mobile phone credit card app

Jodi

A new app for iPhone, iPad and Android devices will now allow anyone to accept credit cards via their mobile phone. Of course, it was only a matter of time before this development occurred and it seems that Square, whose CEO is also one of the co-founders of Twitter, have got themselves in on this particular act. And if you need a credit card reader Square will send one out for free.

Be aware, though, that Square can’t handle refunds or delete transactions, but no doubt this facility will not be long in happening too. This app development could be very useful for businesses, such as contractors who are mobile themselves.

Google SERP revamp means theres another reason to blog

Jodi

If you needed another reason to blog for your business, here’s one. You will have noticed that Google has rolled out its redesigned search results page. Like other search engines such as Yahoo, visitors now see a left-hand navigation panel on the hugely popular Google site.

While most of the features on this revamped page are not new, many are now far more prominent. Some of the options are fairly standard, such images, videos, maps, and news. But there is much greater emphasis now being placed on other types of results such as, blogs, updates and discussions.

Google Blog Search has been around for a while but now users will notice it more – and will be much more likely to use it for searching. Instead of having to go to the Google Blog search engine itself or the “click to show options” link from a Google SERP, Blogs is simply a visible option for any given query. That means if people want to see commentary for the subject they searched for, there’s a good chance they’ll go to this set of results. So it’s time all businesses where blogging, isn’t it?

New m-commerce launch for M&S

Jodi

Store giant M&S has launched a new website specifically for mobile phone users. The specially designed site allows shoppers to search, browse and buy products directly from mobile handsets.

The m.marksandspencer.com site is synchronised with the main M&S website, which means customers can log on to existing accounts.

The news comes as e-commerce experts predict a huge growth in the numbers of people who use mobile phones for shopping in coming years.

M&S Direct director Dave Hughes is reported as saying: “This is a major step forward in mobile retailing. Mobile optimised shopping sites have been done before by specialist retailers, but M&S entering the market with 21 million customers, one of the UK’s most recognised brands and a well-known range of products changes the mobile retail landscape.”
