Is social bookmarking important for SEO?

Jodi

Social bookmarking, as defined, is a method of saving and sharing favourite websites or just posts of a website to another site that anyone connected to Internet can access it, view and vote. Voting is the most important aspect while as the number of votes increases the more chances of hitting “most popular bookmarks” page which translates into a flood of traffic that can be for a short time or that can become regular readers.

Social bookmarking is associated with viral marketing or link baiting and in a way it’s almost the same thing: a links is shared, the story becomes popular getting more and more votes, the word is spreading and it can become a fantastic way of marketing a site. From traffic perspective, this is extraordinary, but how important is this for search engine optimisation?

Although lately many bookmarking sites have changed their policy into adding nofollow to outbound links, whenever an article/site is bookmarked that very website gets a link from an authority and popular site. This might seem as a great way of link building but as other great methods can have a negative aspects, this should not be over-used as well, as spamming it.

Another positive aspect of social bookmarking sites is that bookmarking definitely increase the time for search engines to index a new page or a new blog post recently added. Last, but not least, another trick most people seem to forget is using tags when bookmarking a website while tags might help the targeted keywords to rank higher.

Although one should not create an entire SEO campaign based on this method, it would be best to include it in the “to-do list” for promoting a website and ranking it as high as possible in the end.

Google goes deeper into social media, buys PostRank

Jodi

After seeing the potential social media has for the whole online environment, Google obviously wanted a big piece of this market and launched its own social service – Google Buzz. Buzz was a major failure so it has been left aside, however the guys at Google started to dig deeper and deeper in social area.

After the rumors that SERPs are influenced by the “buzz” a certain website has in the social media environment, Google recently launched its +1 button (quite similar to Facebook’s Like) and recently they have acquired a social analytics online service called PostRank.

Basically, PostRank’s main mission is to track and measure social posts so this movement from Google is not a surprise, while trying not to being left aside in all this popular social thing. It seems that they will use data provided by this new “department” to understand more how social works and where can they find a breach to jump in this boat.

It is not the first acquisition Google makes in this niche, PostRank following a large number of social media companies like SayNow or Fflick. However, it seems that PostRank’s main objective will be to keep track and analyse all things related to online social.

Again, it is not a surprise that Google bought this company right after they have launched into the wild their +1 button – with this new technology in their hands they will be able to track +1’s social impact and analyse whether it is a successful social launch or not.

Googles Matt Cutts confirms: links from social media help ranking

Jodi

As we already know by now, Matt Cutts recently launched another set of videos answering questions regarding Google algorithm, updates and so on, all coming from webmasters, marketers or SEO folks. One of the most important updates Matt revealed through his videos is regarding how Google evaluates social media links and the answer might be surprising for most people.

Basically, Matt confirmed that Google will now be using links coming from social media sites like Facebook, Twitter etc in determining a website ranking. According to this video, Google always considers links from social networking websites however this time they will be more into authors’ reputation on those sites. On the other hand, social media profiles that cannot be crawled or that are not public (like the ones from Facebook where different users share stuff only with friends) cannot help in search rankings.

Is social media almost dead, as numerous voices were claiming lately? Not at all, it seems that it is just the beginning while not only Google but also Bing is taking a closer look on profiles from those sites. Matt Cutts’ exact words were:

“I filmed a video back in May 2010 where I said that we didn’t use that as a signal, and at the time, we did not use that as a signal, but now, we’re taping this in December 2010, and we are using that as a signal.”

Is this the end of SEO Vs Social Media debate?

The problem that arises from this news is, of course, related to spam. There are numerous tools that can create hundreds of fake profiles, add thousands of Twitter followers in days or get thousands of Likes in a blink of an eye, what about those? Should we be concerned about this? Will “social media spam” be the next buzz for 2011?

We believe that while launching this new update, the guys at Google have already taken in consideration how to separate spam profiles from the authority profiles that weight some trust in social media environment. One thing is sure now: Internet marketers and will change the way they look into social media while this is becoming more and more serious for Search Engines and can (and will) influence the SERPs in a positive/negative way.
