Twitter is great. And it’s easy to become addicted to the social media tool. But once you have more than about 10 people that you are following it can easily become overly time-consuming. So to get the best out of Twitter you should spend some time every month giving your account the once over.

Here is a quick checklist of things to do:

Is everyone active?: There is no pointing following a host of tweeters who aren’t active or who message rubbish or who are no longer useful to your website business. Take a look at who you are following and decide who to “unfollow”. One useful tool for doing this is called UnTweeps (http://untweeps.com/)

Who is following you?: …And should you be following them. Sometimes you forget to follow the right people so it’s worth having a check to see whether relevant followers are worth following back.

Take control: It’s possible to “mute” Twitter chat about certain topics. Simply take control of your stream and apply filters.

Set up Twitter lists: Twitter lists allow you to keep track of different tweeters in your life. For example you could have friends, business, family, hobbies lists.
