Whats the buzz about Buzz?
JodiThe new social media forum Google’s Buzz launched recently – and didn’t have the best of starts because of an automatic email-to-all-contacts fiasco. Now this has been sorted Buzz reckons it’s ready to take on the other big social media players, Twitter and Facebook. But do we really need another?
So many people now love Facebook. It’s got a straightforward role in that you can connect to friends in the real world, stay in touch, share piccies, chat, message, give status updates, birthday reminders etc.
Twitter is also fast catching on and becoming the place where you chat to a more general public face. It’s where you meet new people and make new contacts with likeminded folks. Rather like one big networking forum.
So where will Buzz fit in? Technically, the service provides public or private status updates within Gmail. But its dynamics are very different. Everyone contributing to a thread is notified of new replies, which means that the conversation can become more important than the first posting. Some more popular postings can create hundreds of replies within hours.
It’s claimed that Buzz will therefore be most useful when you’re looking for answers. So if you post a question, friends can suggest tips, advice and ideas.
Only time will tell how many people cotton on to the Buzz.
